With its crenellated, pointed towers, impassable moat and landscaped gardens, Haar Castle seems to have sprung straight from a novelist's imagination. Using all the features of neo-Gothic architecture, it oscillates elegantly between a characterful fortress and a princely palace. Of the 200 rooms that make up this gigantic castle, only a fraction are open to the public, but a visit to the salons, bedrooms and kitchens reveals the opulence of life for the Van Zuylen family in the 20th century.
