SYNAGOGUE
A superb synagogue in Groningen, a beautiful place with a troubled history, which serves as a showcase for exhibitions
A superb synagogue, the work of Tjeerd Kuipers and Ytzen van der Veen, who also designed the city's Zuiderkerk. The Moorish-style building dates from 1906. It was closed by the occupiers in 1942 (only 200 Groningen Jews survived the war, out of a community of 2,800...). Converted into an electronics warehouse, it was later sold and turned into a dry cleaner's! Purchased by the city, the building became a synagogue again in 1981. A beautiful place with a troubled history, it now serves as a showcase for exhibitions.
