VAN SWINDEREN HUYS
Reception room in a medieval style building that was used for tax collection, visible on the façade
This building isn't as old as it looks! Dating from 1912, it was inspired by a medieval building (Raad en Wijnhuis) on the Grote Markt, demolished in 1775. It was first and foremost a place of collection: the tax-collecting function is visible on the façade, " Quiquid bono concedes, des partem tibi ". A fish is depicted on the façade, and it is said that residents on their way to pay their taxes would say: "I'm going to the shark". The venue has belonged to the university since 2011 and is now used as a reception venue.
