GRONINGUE STATION
The Groningen railway station, the first railroad line connecting Groningen to Leeuwarden, one of the most representative buildings
The first rail link between Groningen and Leeuwarden was established in 1866. The first station occupied the site until 1872, when it was replaced by a second, larger one. It was 20 years later that the decision was taken to build the present station. The building, designed by Isaac Gosschalk (1838-1907), was completed in April 1896 (not 1895, as the inscription on the pediment indicates). The complex was renovated and modernized to its original appearance in 1999. It is one of the most representative buildings of 19th-century Groningen.
