SINT ANTHONY GASTHUIS
An incredible complex in Groningen, simply beautiful and peaceful, offering a beautiful view of St. Joseph's Cathedral
This incredible complex was founded in 1517 and built with stones from a demolished castle. It housed the plague-stricken and then the insane until 1844... Part of the complex's income came from Sunday visitors who paid to see the lunatics... A different era, then, but fortunately a thing of the past. The complex is simply magnificent and peaceful, with a beautiful view of St. Joseph's Cathedral. It is, of course, a protected monument. A special booklet has been published to mark the site's 500th anniversary.
