DE WAAG
Waag located on the square, a historic and photogenic building, a former public weighing scale, installed in Leeuwarden
Located on the Waagplein, this historic and photogenic building is the former public weighing house of Leeuwarden. The red brick building was built in 1598 and replaced a public weight that had become too small. The oldest mention of a scale in Leeuwaarden dates back to 1483. The cheese and butter market was held on this square, which is why the scales were so useful. The canopy was added to the building in 1816 to protect the goods. This scale was in operation until 1880. A café has since been housed there.
