BASILICA NOTRE-DAME
Notre Dame Basilica, the oldest monument in the city, with turrets, beautiful sculptures and works of art
This is the city's oldest monument, built on the presumed site of a Roman settlement. Already mentioned in the year 1000, the forebuilding overlooking the square dates from that period. The upper part, with its turrets, was added later. Admire the narthex and choir, adorned with beautiful sculptures. The nave and apse, dating from the 12th century, are in the Romanesque style. The interior was renovated between 1886 and 1916 by architect Pierre Cuypers, famous for the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Cuypers restored the Barbara tower and the north tower of the choir, reversing modifications made in the 13th century. During the Second World War, the church was spared bombing, although the Germans stole the bell in 1943.
In the mystical half-light of this basilica, remarkable works of art and medieval frescoes are revealed. The chapel houses a statue of Mary, renowned for her healing powers, attracting many pilgrims. The treasury, accessible at an additional cost, houses an incredible collection of silver, gold and other precious objects.
To fully appreciate the splendor of the basilica, don't forget to put in a coin to light the sublime apse. The basilica was consecrated by Pope Pius XI, adding to its prestige. The mystical Gothic chapel, in particular, leaves a lasting impression on visitors. During exam periods, it's not uncommon for the candles to run out, a sign of the students' devotion.
