KAZEMATTEN (CASEMATES)
An ideal tourist attraction to dive into the city's past, with a system of impressive ingenuity.
The casemates are part of an immense and complex system of underground fortifications built between 1575 and 1825, of which only a small part remains (around 14 km). The tour lasts about an hour and takes us back into the city's past. The impressively ingenious system includes trap wells, caponiers, listening posts... The tour is instructive and brings to life the key stages of military offensives. The network served as an air-raid shelter during the Second World War, and could house over 15,000 people.
