HELPOORT
A remnant of the first city walls, the oldest gate in the Netherlands, thus serving as a defensive structure in Maastricht
The Helpoort (Hell Gate) is a remnant of the city's original 13th-century ramparts. It is the oldest gate in the Netherlands, and served as a defensive structure until the early 16th century, when the new city walls (Walmuur) were built. This magnificent, photogenic tower was renovated in 1906 and is the only remaining city gate in Maastricht. A visit to the tower is included in the tour of the city walls (short and long circuit), which takes visitors back through history, walls, casemates and defensive lines.
