NATUURHISTORISCH MUSEUM
Museum with fossilized remains, aquariums to discover the fauna and flora of the region, with exhibitions
Maastricht's Natural History Museum is housed in a former cloister dating from 1703. It is dedicated to the unique natural environment of South Limburg, with a particular focus on the region's geology. Among the highlights are replicas of the fossilized remains of the gigantic mosasaur (or Meuse lizard) discovered in 1770 in the Saint-Pietersberg. This specimen was taken (or stolen, according to the people of Maastricht) by the French to be exhibited at the Natural History Museum in Paris in 1795. However, in 1999, an even larger mosasaur was discovered on site - a real revenge for the locals! Nicknamed Bèr, it is on display in the garden.
The museum also houses aquariums and offers a fascinating insight into local flora and fauna. Listening to the songs of 54 different birds adds a playful touch to the visit. The "cabinet", the museum's most charming room, plunges us into the atmosphere of its origins, when the museum was an association of enthusiasts comparing their finds and collections. Outside, the botanical garden, a veritable haven of peace, allows visitors to discover the region's wild plants.
The museum also produces and sells its own honey. A room houses temporary exhibitions, while themed workshops for younger visitors, such as mask-making or the creation of a mini-museum, are offered. An essential visit, offering a real break from time.
