MARKT
Large and lively market place with many facades with visible beams in Maastricht
The central square took its present form when construction of the town hall began in 1659. It was designed by Pieter Post, who also designed the Mauritshuis in The Hague. In the past, public executions were held here. The last one took place in 1860, and was the last execution in the whole of the Netherlands. Many of the building's facades date back to the 17th century, and the beams are clearly visible. A market is held here every Wednesday and Saturday, while the town hall is now only used for ceremonies.
