A mountain of several meters with artificial caves, with a fascinating labyrinth, and precious paintings
Located not far from Maastricht, between the Meuse and Geer (Jeker) valleys, Montagne Saint-Pierre is a unique natural site, culminating at an altitude of 100 meters. It is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity, home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, as well as for its hiking trails offering panoramic views.
One of its hidden gems is its vast network of man-made caves, dug out over the centuries by the extraction of marl, a stone used in the construction of many buildings (including the Utrecht dome). These caves, which form an impressive labyrinth of over 22,000 galleries, stretch over 230 km and tell a fascinating story, from the first extractions in the 13th century to the discovery of the famous mosasaurus.
Visitors can explore them on guided tours, where they'll discover inscriptions dating back to 1630, a small abandoned farmhouse, and enjoy the unique experience of walking in total darkness. The caves of the northern system even housed precious works of art, such as Rembrandt's Night Watch, during the Second World War.
In addition to the caves, Montagne Saint-Pierre offers an ideal setting for walks through its verdant landscapes and winding paths. The site also offers educational activities for younger visitors. Please note: the temperature in the caves is around 10°C, with high humidity, so it's advisable to cover up well and wear appropriate footwear.
