VAN ABBEMUSEUM
This museum of modern art of the city includes the largest collection of works by El Lissitzky, the constructivist movement
This museum of modern art is housed in a historic red-brick building dating from 1936, designed by architect A.-J. Kropholler. A new modern wing has been added, while the old building has been renovated under the direction of Amsterdam architect Abel Cahen. Initially, Cahen had planned to build the new wing on top of the existing building, but this project was rejected. He therefore modified his plans to place the extension behind the original building.
The library, entrance and store were designed by Flemish designer Maarten van Severen. The museum's collection, begun in 1909 by cigar manufacturer Henri van Abbe, includes works by Carel Willink and Isaac Israëls, as well as 1,000 sculptures, 700 paintings and 1,000 prints. The De Stijl, Expressionism and Surrealism movements are particularly well represented. It also boasts the largest collection of works by El Lissitzky, a representative of the Constructivist movement. Temporary exhibitions are held in the old building, while the permanent collection is displayed in the modern extension. Not to be missed is Auguste Rodin's superb statue of Honoré de Balzac.
The café-restaurant is also worth a visit, as is the skylight in the new wing, which presents modern art in a veritable showcase. The viewpoints overlooking the Dommel River are particularly pleasant. Don't miss the elevator for a unique sound experience.
