BEGIJNHOF MUSEUM
Museum giving an idea of the very spartan living conditions of the nuns by presenting a traditional house
In the 13th century, the lords of Breda offered the nuns a piece of land on the former Valkenberg. The beguines were originally a group of pious women who took a vow of celibacy, obedience and devotion to God, and who withdrew from the world, living in virtual autarky. The name "beguine" comes from their beige clothes. In 1836, they were allowed to build their church on their land.
