KASTELPLEIN - CASTLE SQUARE
This square, in front of the city's castle, was the scene of many battles during the city's many sieges
This square, in front of the town's castle, dates back to the early 16th century and was the scene of battles during the town's many sieges. It was also used as a pillory for Protestants, who were martyred and burned in public. Opposite, you can see the façade of the Royal Military Academy and the Stadhouderpoort (the gate of the Stadhouder, the governor of Holland). On the right, the house of the academy's governor. Famous figures such as William of Orange lived here.
