CIDADELA DE CASCAIS
Modern upscale hotel-bar-restaurant with garden and pool in Cascais organizing temporary exhibitions.
At the time of the Portuguese discoveries, a late medieval fortification (early 15th century) was erected to defend the coast and port of Lisbon, blocking access to the Tagus from the frequent assaults of English, French and Moorish pirates. Completed between 1488 and 1505, during the reigns of Dom João II and Dom Manuel I, the bastion added the Santo António tower to Lisbon's existing fortified towers of São Vicente de Belém and São Sebastião de Caparica. Enlarged, the citadel became Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Luz at the end of the 16th century, then served as a summer residence for royalty from 1871, before falling under the authority of the Exército português, the Portuguese army. Reclaimed by luxury hotel group Pestana, the cidadela became a pousada, thanks to a project by architects Gonçalo Byrne and David Sinclair. Inaugurated in April 2012 by the President of the Republic himself, the military fort now houses a modern, upscale hotel with a Baluarte (bastion) garden and a Cisterna (cistern) room featuring unique architecture and ambience. Indoor or outdoor swimming pool, bar overlooking the Cascais marina, petiscos restaurant based on a 19th-century tertúlias concept. Temporary exhibitions are also organized regularly and, with the Cidadela Art District program, you can also visit some of the artists' studios located next to a bookshop and souvenir stores.

Si possible, visitez le musée avec un guide. L'histoire de la citadelle vaut la peine ainsi que les quelques pièces que l'on peut visiter. On y parle même de la guerre de l'Yser!
