This mosque was built by Abdur Rahman from 1893. Construction lasted four years. It is the largest mosque in Kabul, 146 m long and 44 m wide. The central dome, 12 m high, is surrounded by 76 smaller domes.
It was in this mosque that the major religious festivals and official ceremonies were celebrated.
Destroyed during the civil war, the mosque was restored by the Taliban in 1996.
