THE FORTRESS OF BALA HISSAR

The ruins of the ancient Balkh, the historical capital of the Astrianes and the Kouchans, extend from the north of the central park. The walls that encircle the fortress date back to most of the timurid era. They were built a little before the foundations, which date back to the kouchan era. Archaeologists who work on the site think that they can discover vestiges of the even older cities. In 2002, DAFA archaeologists updated Greek architectural remains, then material from the Achéménides era and, finally, deposits from several successive periods. The archaeological excavations conducted by the DAFA also led to the discovery of pieces of pottery dating back to the timurid era and pieces of Chinese pottery.
In concrete terms, there are only ruins, pieces of wall walls around a large plain, where bouzkachi are organized. Moreover, a champion of bouzkachi, dead on the ground, has his grave here. The site is extremely impressive and is worth a great walk. Beautiful view of the new town of Balk.
