Built in the th century, at the top of a hill, the citadel once housed Sultan Mahmud Palace. A vast enclosure, of which there are pieces, surrounded the city, in which we entered by four doors. 45 m high is probably one of Afghanistan's most impressive fortresses. It was completely destroyed during the first Anglo-Afghan war (1838-1842). Retapée, it served as a military garrison for the British and then the Afghans. It was then rebuilt but without restoring its past splendour. The interior is in ruins. Between 1978 and 1992, she was occupied by the communists and then by various commands during the civil war. The old town of Ghazni is at the foot of the citadel.
