NYANDUNGU ECO-PARK
The restoration of the Nyandungu wetland has resulted in the creation of this 121 ha ecotourism park, of which 70 ha are wetlands and 50 ha are forest. As many as 17,000 trees, including 55 native species, have been replanted. The Nyandungu Urban Wetland Eco-Tourism Park, as it is known, was inaugurated in July 2022. It stands as a model of urban ecosystem restoration and an environmental project that the Rwandan government hopes to replicate in the years to come. "Urban wetlands play an essential role in flood prevention, pollution control and are home to unique biodiversity. In the face of climate change impacts, wetlands will be a key ally in protecting lives and livelihoods. We look forward to working with our partners to replicate the success of Nyandungu's restoration in other urban wetlands in Kigali and across the country," said Juliet Kabera, director general of the Environmental Authority, at the opening.
The vegetation is growing, the wetlands are coming back to life, attracting more than 100 bird species. The park includes 10 km of walking and biking trails, observation areas, picnic areas, an information center and a restaurant. In the heart of the city, it is true that this park is a success in environmental terms, well designed and rather pleasant to walk around. However, you should bring something to protect yourself from the sun, as there is little shade.
