MUSANZE CAVES
The whole region is based on a Gruyère cheese which extends beyond the Congolese border! Since 2014, the giant Musanze Cave, located in the heart of the Volcanoes National Park, has become a tourist attraction. Formed as a result of volcanic activity nearly 65 million years ago and 2 km long, the Musanze Cave is the most visited of all those in the region (about 50 in total). It was used as a shelter in the past during the wars that shook the region and as a refuge for a few thousand people during the genocide in 1994, saving them from terror and massacres. Today, completely rehabilitated and developed, it is officially recognized as a tourist site and attracts many visitors. Footbridges, paths, stairs and paved floors have been built to facilitate movement. Helmets, jackets, gloves and boots are provided at the entrance. You will move slowly underground, in lush vegetation and under the gaze of hundreds of bats hanging from the wet rock. The itinerary is fully secured. All caving activities are strictly supervised. Those who do not want to venture indoors will always have the opportunity to enjoy the outside environment, which is also very beautiful to explore. No need to book in advance, this visit can be improvised at the beginning or end of the day. It takes a minimum of one hour of walking, two hours being the best.
