THE NORTHERN LAKES ROUTE
It is possible to make the circuit from Ruhengeri from the superb lakes Ruhondo and Burera (112 km), taking the direction of Uganda.
Km 12. Turn right towards the Ntaruka hydroelectric plant.
Km 17 : On your right, very beautiful view of the lakes. Lake Burera is the biggest but also the most beautiful lake in the Northern Province. It is fed by the Rugezi swamp. Only a narrow hill separates it from Lake Ruhondo
Km 23. Leave Uganda road taking a track on your right that descends towards Lake Burera.
Km 27. Magnificent view of Lake Burera from a promontory often frequented by crowned cranes.
Km 36. At the bend in the track we discover the Muhabura volcano (4,127 m). We move away a little from the lake, until km 40.
Km 42. Magnificent Rusumo Falls, fed by the Rugezi Marshes. They can be seen more closely at km 44. The road leaves the Burera lake, on the left you overlook the Rugezi marshes (8000 ha).
Km 62. If you turn left, you can leave the circuit and go back down directly to Kigali.
At km 96, staying on the circuit, we reach the Remera Charity Hostel, one of the most beautiful panoramas in Rwanda!
At km 102 we arrive at Rwaza, one of the oldest Catholic parishes in Rwanda. Just before arriving on the Ruhengeri-Kigali road, you will come to the Mukungwa waterfalls, which are more than 2 km long and form the outlet of Lake Ruhondo.
