LIBERATION MUSEUM
It is on these heights, 80 km north-east of Kigali, now silent, that a great page of history has been turned, not only for Rwanda, but for all of Central Africa. From 1992 to 1994, the rebels of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) - led by its military wing, the Rwandan Patriotic Army (RPA), and by General Paul Kagame, now President of the Republic - took up their quarters there as the Arusha power-sharing agreements were being negotiated. The attack on President Habyarimana in 1994 was to change the course of events and it was from Mulindi that the rebels swept the country until their final victory on 4 July 1994. Under the guidance of a guide, we discover the house where Kagame received General Dallaire, head of the UN mission, the bunker where he hid in case of danger, and the houses of Kagame's fellow travellers, the canteen where the rebels were watching a football match when they heard the news of the attack on Habyarimana, the basketball court where peace tournaments were held, the football field where the RPA (Rwandan Patriotic Army) team, now in the Rwandan 1st division, was born, etc. This museum tells the story of Rwanda's liberation struggle that put an end to the genocide against the Tutsis. The museum also illustrates a sequence of events before, during and after the struggle through visuals that include texts and artifacts. Very informative on the recent history of Rwanda.
