CONGO NILE TRAIL
Go there and contact
There are many ideas for hiking or mountain biking in Rwanda, as the landscapes are so diverse and the trails so varied. Among all these itineraries, the Congo Nile Trail along Lake Kivu, from Gisenyi to Cyangugu (227 km), seems the most attractive. The northern part includes many "subtrails", or trekking loops that can be completed in one or two days from the main road or track. This tour can be done in either direction: either starting from Gisenyi or starting from Cyangugu, but it is more pleasant to start from Gisenyi. As an indication, it takes about ten days for those who would like to complete the entire Congo Nile Trail on foot, and five to seven days by mountain bike, depending on the activities along the way, remembering that the trail is mostly paved. From Ginseyi to Kibuye, the dirt road remains and one passes from village to village. On the other hand, from Kibuye to Kamembe, the road is mainly paved. Nevertheless, the circuit offers from the beginning to the end breathtaking landscapes on the Lake Kivu. The itinerary is relatively well indicated, however, if you opt for mountain biking, we advise you to leave with a guide-mechanic and the logistical support of an agency such as Mercator Assistance, which will be able to plan the hotel nights and adapt the circuit to your physical condition. The Congo Nile Trail cannot be improvised, it requires a minimum of training and preparation.
