Notre-Dame-de-la-Sagesse Cathedral, or simply Butare Cathedral, is the largest Catholic church in Rwanda and apparently the largest in Central Africa. The Belgians built it in 1937 in memory of Astrid, queen consort of the Belgians until 1935, born princess of Sweden. Butare was then the colonial capital. The cathedral, original in its three-part red brick design, is worth a visit. Unless you are attending the Sunday service, allow a short half-hour to visit the house of God.
