Born in 2013 from the merger of ten institutions of higher learning, the University of Rwanda is now the largest and makes Butare the intellectual center of the country. Many of Rwanda's intellectual elite have passed through here. Founded in 1963 by the Rwandan government and the Congregation of the Dominican Fathers of Quebec, it originally had 50 students and 15 teachers. Today, there are more than 25,000 students and about 500 professors and assistants. Courses are taught in English.
