Since 2010, the management of Akagera Park has been under the supervision of the NGO African Parks. This organization manages a total of 22 protected areas in 12 countries on the African continent. A gigantic 120 km fence has been built to protect local residents and their crops, prevent poaching and avoid conflicts. More than 100 rangers patrol and monitor the park. Akagera has a unique ecosystem and all the famous "Big Five" (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhinoceros) can now be found there.
