Clifftop fortress in Sagres, featuring a mosaic wind rose dating from the time of Henry the Navigator.

Perched atop its cliff, it seems to mark the end of a world. By rushing into it, we have a vague impression of leaving the planet earth for an unknown universe. Initially built in the 15th century, redesigned according to Vauban's constructions in the 18th century, it was disfigured in the 20th century by a concrete block for trading. The mosaic compass rose is said to date from the time of Henry the Navigator and to have served as an instrument for the nautical school he founded in Sagres.

Cette forteresse n’a rien d’extraordinaire, ce n’est pas un beau bâtiment historique. Par contre, il y a une vue magnifique sur la mer et les falaises. Prévoir une veste car beaucoup de vent.

Heureusement que la vue est magnifique, car la forteresse ressemble plus à un blockhaus qu'à un château fort !

Pour 3€, pas de miracle, cette forteresse n'a pas grand chose à nous apprendre. Il faut plutôt venir ici pour le site qui est impressionnant avec la mer de tous les côtés et ses falaises, et en profiter pour aller au Cap St-Vincent et les belles plages ainsi que le petit port juste à côté.

La forteresse est situé au bord d'une falaise, elle domine ainsi la mer. Elle est très bien conservée, avec notamment sa rose des vents qui fait aussi office d'horloge solaire.

Une très belle vue qui vaut le détour. De belles couleurs des rochers qui surplombent la mer à pic. Des pêcheurs qui s'offrent au vent. Une forteresse qui malheureusement est trop moderne pour mon goût. Mais une belle halte avant le cap saint-Vincent.
