AL-MUTHAMID PLACE
Modern fountain in the center of Al-Muthamid square, depicting daily scenes from Silves in the Middle Ages.
Named after the politician who ruled Silves in the eleventh century, at the height of Arab-Andalusian culture. At the age of 12, along with Ibn Ammar, a local poet, Al Mutamid devoted himself to writing, music and singing. When he was forced to return to Seville, he wrote the famous poem saluting Silves. Note especially the recent development of the square: the modern fountain in the center of the square that depicts daily scenes of Silves in the Middle Ages. The concrete cube that stands opposite serves as the city's library.
