The Ria Formosa Natural Park stretches for over 60 km, with dunes and all the qualities needed for beautiful walks.

It would be a great oversight not to visit the Ria Formosa Natural Park during a stay in the Algarve, and almost impossible, it must be said... It has everything you need for a pleasant stroll: pristine, sublime beaches, picturesque islands that have been home to many fishermen for years, a unique ecosystem, atypical flora and birdlife (especially in spring and autumn, during migration). Researchers from all over the world are interested in this area, studying variations in currents and channels. Here, dunes are not necessarily formed by the wind, as is the case elsewhere...

In fact, it's a vast marshland stretching from Vale de Lobo to Tavira, covering the coasts of Quinta do Lago, Faro, Olhão, Fuseta and Santa Luzia, among others. Recognized as a nature park since 1987, the Ria Formosa stretches for some 60 kilometers and covers just over 18,000 hectares. Dunes protect the coastline and inland marshes from the roughness of the Atlantic Ocean, which, during heavy storms, does not hesitate to wipe out a few sandbanks on which houses still stand, as was the case in winter 2009-2010. The lagoon is much wider at Faro than at Tavira. The authorities recognize five islands: Barreta, Culatra, Armona, the island of Tavira and the island of Cabanas for those who want to feel alone in the world.
