IGREJA DA MISERICORDIA
Church of the Misericordia in Tavira, home to Lisbon's Monastery of the Jeronimos, with altarpieces and magnificent antique azulejos.
One of the nuggets that make Tavira proud, the Church of Mercy dates from the 16th century and is considered the most remarkable Renaissance building in the Algarve. It is the work of the master André Pilarte, who was also involved in the construction of the sumptuous Monastery of the Jeronimos in Lisbon. The Renaissance spirit is perceptible in the portal flanked by statues, shields of Portugal and high reliefs representing saints. Inside, it is found in the columns and altarpieces of the chapels. Also noteworthy are the magnificent old azulejos.
