PONTE ANTIGA
Bridge over the Gilão River, with a large central breakwater, offering an unmissable walk from one bank to the other.
Until the 17th century, according to a well-known old engraving, the bridge over the Gilão River had a cruciform plan due to the existence of a large central breakwater, and even ended up being inhabited according to the chronicler Henrique Sarrão, who, around 1600, reports the existence of houses on the bridge. One of the entrances, on the south side, was defended by a large octagonal medieval tower. It served as a watchtower and was attached to the city walls by an arch, but was demolished in 1883. A walk from one bank to the other is a must.
