GRUTAS DO ROSSIO
The caves of Rossio were dug for the exploitation of limestone quarries, intended for the manufacture of millstones.
Unearthed between 1940 and 1950, the Rossio caves were dug to exploit limestone quarries, used to make millstones. It is also thought that the stone was used as ballast for Portuguese ships during the Great Discoveries. The quarries form a system of underground rooms and galleries, which still reveal the marks of the quarrying work. An unusual legend: it is said that these tunnels linked the houses of all the city's wealthy families.
