IGREJA MATRIZ
The Igreja Matriz is the former mosque of the city transformed into a church after the Reconquest of the country by the Christians.
The Igreja Matriz is in fact the city's former Almohad mosque, converted into a church after the Reconquest of the country by the Christians in the 13th century. As the mosque itself was built from a Romanesque church, the building is a blend of Romanesque, Arab, Mudejar and Gothic remains! All white, its strange structure, wider than it is tall, is a reminder of its Arab origins: note the four doors decorated with a horseshoe arch characteristic of the Arab style, and behind the altar, the ancient mihrab indicating the orientation of Mecca to the faithful.
