The first defensive structures built by the Romans became the main stronghold of the region.

Castelo dominates the Guadiana valley. The first defensive structures built by the Romans and then the Barbarians were consolidated by the Moors to become the region's main stronghold. The keep dates back to 1292, when the Torre de Menagem was built under the leadership of João Fernandes. The outer walls were built during the reign of Denis I, and work continued throughout the 14th century. The entrance gate and clock tower are particularly noteworthy. A panoramic view can be enjoyed from the sentry walk and from the summit (60 steps).

Château de Mertola
Il ne reste pas grand chose d'autre que l'enceinte et le donjon de ce château qui domine le village mais la vue depuis les remparts est magnifique.
L'entrée est libre.
