Housed in the former 16th-century Igreja da Misericórdia, the Religious Art Center is home to a collection of paintings, polychrome sculptures and jewelry, which have been removed from several disused churches and chapels in the municipality of Mértola to be kept here in the safest possible conditions. The church is located at the main entrance to Mértola's old port, called Porta da Ribeira. For centuries, this was one of the town's busiest spots, home to the large houses of local merchants.
