Serpa Castle stands on a promontory a few kilometers from the left bank of the Guadiana River.
A few kilometers from the left bank of the Guadiana stands the Serpa castle, perched 230 meters above sea level. Its origins date back to the Romans, who erected a fortification on the site to control the road. At various times in its history, it passed into the hands of the Portuguese, Spanish and Moors, was ruined over the centuries, abandoned, destroyed and restored... Not much of its splendor remains, but a sentry walk affords fine views of the surrounding countryside.
