This network of hiking trails will allow you to discover one of the most beautiful coastal areas in Europe.
This network of hiking trails, well known to ancient pilgrims, covers some 400 kilometers. It allows you to discover one of Europe's most beautiful coastal areas. If you feel like it, you can walk from Santiago do Cacém to Cabo de São Vicente. Depending on the time of year you set off, you'll be more or less alone on the roads, discovering the coastal Alentejo. The route is very well signposted, with stages of no more than 25 km, and can be easily modified to suit your fitness level. On the website dedicated to the route, you can book accommodation at each stage and meet other hikers. There are several possible routes:
The historic route. This is the route that links Santiago do Cacém to Cape St. Vincent, and is also the longest at 230 km. It has 12 stages and is mostly inland.
The fishermen's trail. As its name suggests, it runs along the sea, taking you past small fishing villages and beautiful beaches. It's a somewhat physical route, consisting of 5 stages.
Circular routes. These are short, easy routes scattered all along the coast, and can be completed in a very short time.
In 2016, the Rota Vicentina Historic Trail was certified as "Leading Quality Trails - Best of Europe", a recognition awarded by the ERA (European Ramblers Association).
All the information you need to prepare your hike is available on the website.
