The castle of Santiago do Cácem offers a superb view of the plain.
The Alentejo is full of castles, hilltop villages and crenellated fortresses. But Santiago do Cácem, which appeared around 1712, is in a class of its own: you'd think you were in a children's book illustration, so perfect is its line of ramparts, beautifully preserved, with its crenellated barbican jutting into the sky. From the top of the battlements, the view over the plain is superb. Next door, the white Igreja Matriz towers over the town. Don't hesitate to head down to the small town center around the Conde de Bracial square.
