Villa Nova de Milfontes is one of the most interesting seaside resorts on the Alentejano coast.
Vila Nova de Milfontes is one of the most interesting seaside resorts on the Alentejano coast, part of the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina. The municipality is bordered on the south by the Mira River, creating a superb setting. There are a dozen sandy beaches, both wild and supervised, one pebble beach and numerous coves, some of which are inaccessible or even dangerous.
Praia do Farol, the lighthouse beach, is the counterpart of Malhão beach on the other side of the Rio Mira. Located close to the town center, it has a river front and a sea front. It is one of the busiest beaches in the area.
Praia das Furnas is located at the mouth of the river, and can be reached by small ferries that make regular trips in summer (boarding takes place at the castle). A beautiful spot dotted with numerous dunes set against the coastal woods, amidst reddish rocks. Sailing, windsurfing and kayaking can be practised on the river for the less adventurous, or at sea if you're feeling confident.
The Praia do Malhão is a succession of three unspoilt beaches, accessed from the southern end, first via the CM 1072 road in the village of Brunheiras, then along a long, rather chaotic track. The area is well known to surfers and bodyboarders, who consider it a quality spot. Naturists are welcome in the northern part. Please note that the area is unsupervised.
