IGREJA NOSSA SENHORA DA GRAÇA
A church whose 16th century cloister is a fine example of the early Renaissance.
Built by Miguel de Arruda in 1540, its cloister is a fine example of the early Renaissance. The church facade, meanwhile, was designed by a Frenchman. On the triangular pediment, four mythological giants carry large balls surmounted by flames, the "four parts of the world" according to the Portuguese at the time of the Great Discoveries. The king inscribed Padre de la patria on the façade when the country could still boast of its empire.
