CASTELO DE ELVAS
This castle offers a view of the city, its fortifications and the hills dotted with olive trees.
This castle was built on fortifications dating from the Iron Age during the Moorish occupation. It was taken over by King Sancho II in the 13th century and rebuilt in the 14th and 16th centuries. From the keep, you can enjoy a view of the city (giving the feeling of being a guard, as with all castles at the time, in anticipation of invasion), its fortifications and the hills dotted with olive trees. Just across the street, you can see the imposing Forte de Graça, a jewel of 18th century Portuguese military architecture.
