This aqueduct answered the problems of water supply of the inhabitants of Elvas.
The aqueduct is a gigantic work of art, whose construction began in 1498 and was completed in 1622: a veritable titanic task! It was built in response to the water supply problems of the inhabitants of Elvas, who in times of war were no longer able to approach sources outside the town. After its construction, they were able to benefit from a multitude of springs within the city walls. Stretching 1,367 metres underground from the main spring, then over 5 kilometers at a height of 30 m in the open air, it looks like the Portuguese Pont du Gard..
