The Largo de Santa Clara is a pretty triangular square, surrounded by noble mansions with emblazoned facades. The Arab enclosure (10th century) is pierced by a gate flanked by two towers and crowned by a gallery. In the center, a marble, Manueline pillory is topped by four metal gallows attached to the capital. Originally, it stood on Praça Nova (now Praça da República), before being demolished. It was restored in 1940, with the pieces kept in the Municipal Museum supplemented by contemporary elements, and reassembled here.
