JUDIARIA
The Jewish quarter of Castelo de Vide is one of the most important testimonies of the Jewish presence in Portugal.
The well-preserved Jewish quarter of Castelo de Vide is one of the most important testimonies to the presence of Jews in Portugal. During the Spanish Inquisition, many Spanish Jews sought refuge here. The names of the neighborhood's steep streets are highly evocative: Rua Nova (New Street) refers to Jewish converts, known as "New Christians", Rua do Arçário (Budget Street) to the community's treasurer and Rua das Espinosas (Spinoza Street) to the famous 17th-century philosopher, son of a Castelo de Vide inhabitant!
