MENHIR OF MEADA
The menhir of Meada, declared Monumento Nacional in 2013, is the largest menhir in the Iberian Peninsula.
You're looking at the largest menhir on the Iberian Peninsula! Made entirely of porphyroid granite, it dates from the Chalcolithic (Copper Age), measures 7.15 m in height and 1.25 m in diameter, and weighs an estimated 15 tonnes... It is said to have served as a landmark and to have been part of a group of other menhirs visible from one another, hence its great size. Nearby is the Parque Megalítico dos Coureleiros, a complex of five megalithic groups. The Meada menhir was restored in 1993 and declared a Monumento Nacional in 2013.
