The convent is located just before the entrance to the fortifications. It was founded in the 15th century following a petition to the Pope by the inhabitants and the Infante D. Henrique. Legend has it that the last Visigoth king hid the image of the Virgin during the Islamic invasion, and that it was not discovered until the Reconquest. Its Gothic structure was modified in the 18th century, with the addition of the choir's painted masonry altar and azulejo panels.
