At the end of the academic year, at midnight, some students burn a ribbon received at the beginning of their studies before celebrating the summer.
Tradition of the students. The feast of Queima das Fitas (the "burning of ribbons") marks the end of the academic year. When a student enters university, he or she receives a coloured ribbon according to the discipline chosen, which he or she must hang on his or her buttonhole. At midnight, all the students of the penultimate year burn their ribbons at Largo da Sé Velha, and the real celebration begins: gala ball, processions, train that takes the students to Figueira da Foz for a big midnight bath. Madness in the streets until the early hours of the morning. In other cities too.
