SÃO JOÃO DE TAROUCA
Cistercian monastery transformed into a church where original inscriptions can be seen on its façade.
This Cistercian monastery was the first of this religious order to be built in Portugal in the 12th century. It was built near the water, as the order wished. The monastery was transformed into a church after the extinction of the order in 1834. The original inscriptions (1152) can be seen on the façade, which was rebuilt in the 15th century. The monastery-church has been abandoned for more than 100 years, but one can still admire what remains of the rich interior decoration, despite the austerity of the style of the time.
