SANCTUARY BOM JESUS DO MONTE
Sanctuary that is both a perfect mastery of symmetry and a rigorous manifestation of the profusion of Portuguese Baroque.
The sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, a place of pilgrimage, is both a perfect mastery of symmetry and the most rigorous manifestation of the profusion of Portuguese Baroque. You reach the church by a famous staircase, the Via Sacra, whose white ramps cross each other, contradicting the perfect alignment of the statues that adorn each stage. It is an initiatory journey that begins with a cross and ends with the cross that is in the centre of the church, between the two towers. You can continue the ascent a little further up to Monte Sameiro (572 m).
